Boan Venter Leaves Edinburgh for Lions: What It Means for SA Rugby (2026)

In a heartfelt announcement, rookie Springbok prop Boan Venter has made the significant and challenging decision to depart from Edinburgh, opting to return to his homeland of South Africa. This move, while unexpected for some, aligns with Venter's recent trajectory in professional rugby.

Initially, Venter had aspirations of earning a cap for Scotland through residency; however, he was called into the Springbok squad this year by coach Rassie Erasmus. Since then, he has established himself as a reliable member of the national team, participating in eight matches during their 2025 campaign, with his debut coming against Georgia.

Edinburgh Rugby confirmed that the 28-year-old athlete has signed a contract with Johannesburg's Emirates Lions, set to join them after the conclusion of the United Rugby Championship (URC) season. Given his recent shift in allegiance at the international level, it seemed increasingly likely that the Scottish Rugby Union would approve his departure.

"Leaving a club that has truly felt like home was not an easy choice, but I am thrilled about the opportunity that awaits me with the Emirates Lions," Venter shared, expressing his eagerness to be closer to family. He continued, "I want to extend my gratitude to all the Edinburgh fans for their unwavering support throughout my time here. I have cherished every moment spent in this remarkable city and wearing the jersey. I assure everyone that I will give my utmost for the team and this badge until the very last whistle of the season."

Born in Somerset West, Venter weighs in at 118kg and rose through the ranks of the Sharks organization before making his way to Europe and joining the Edinburgh squad. Since arriving in February 2021, he has made a notable impact, scoring 19 tries over the course of 96 games. He also made history by becoming the first prop to score a hat-trick for Edinburgh during the professional era in a match against Ospreys in January 2022.

Head Coach Sean Everitt expressed his appreciation, stating, "On behalf of everyone at Edinburgh Rugby, I want to thank Boan for his contributions to the club over the last five years. He has played a pivotal role in our squad, making significant contributions on the field, which earned him his international call-up. We wish him and his family all the best as they embark on this new journey back in South Africa and his upcoming challenge with the Lions."
