Get ready to be inspired! Dyson Heppell, a name synonymous with leadership and positivity in Australian Football, is stepping into the spotlight of 'I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here!'. But beyond the game, there's a heart of gold.
Born in Leongatha, Victoria, Heppell's journey began with the Gippsland Power, leading him to be drafted by Essendon with pick No. 8 in the 2010 AFL Draft. He quickly made his mark, winning the 2011 AFL Rising Star Award. He became known for his incredible composure, skill, and unwavering work ethic.
Over his impressive AFL career, Heppell played over 253 games for Essendon, earning All-Australian honors in 2014 and taking home the club's Best and Fairest award, the Crichton Medal. In 2017, he became one of Essendon's youngest captains, leading the team with resilience and authenticity for six seasons, the longest continuous captaincy in club history.
But here's where it gets truly inspiring: Off the field, Heppell is a dedicated philanthropist. He founded Haych the Label to support Harrison Pennicott, a young man battling the rare autoimmune disease scleroderma. He's also a mental health advocate and community ambassador, with a strong commitment to regional youth pathways. His approachable nature, trademark long hair, and infectious optimism have made him one of the AFL's most recognizable figures.
After retiring from the AFL, Heppell has continued to explore media opportunities and commercial initiatives, while staying connected with fans. Entering the jungle, he brings his trademark good humor and country charm.
And this is the part most people miss: Dyson is supporting Very Special Kids, a charity providing palliative care for children and young people in Victoria with life-limiting conditions, as well as support for their families.
“They have played a big role in a number of families that are close to us,” Dyson shared, “especially little H-Man. I’ve been involved with their fundraising days and help raise awareness where I can and all of the staff are beautiful people.”
