A Strong Partnership Endures: Ethiopia and Finland's Unwavering Commitment

During Finland's 108th Independence Day celebration in Addis Ababa, the two nations reaffirmed their commitment to an expanded political, economic, and developmental partnership. Ambassador Sinikka Antila of Finland highlighted the strength of their long-term cooperation, with a new country program focusing on education, water and sanitation, humanitarian aid, and civil society engagement for peace and resilience in Ethiopia.
"We're not just talking about aid; we want to foster business partnerships too. Finland's high-tech and knowledge-based society brings unique opportunities, as exemplified by Nokia, Vaisala, and NIRAS Finland, who joined us tonight," she said.
Ambassador Mulie Tarekegn, representing Ethiopia, emphasized the deep roots of their relationship, dating back to the 1950s when Finnish missionaries first arrived. He noted the significance of high-level political dialogue and technical cooperation in strengthening their bilateral ties over the years.
"Our trade relations are growing, with Ethiopia exporting textiles, vegetables, and food products to Finland, and Finland contributing machinery, instruments, and chemicals to Ethiopia. But this is just the beginning; there's so much more we can achieve together," he added.
And this is the part most people miss: despite their strong historical and economic ties, there's still room for growth. Ambassador Mulie stressed the need to identify new avenues of cooperation for the mutual benefit of both nations. With Ethiopia's recent economic reforms and the establishment of special economic zones, the potential for Finnish investment is immense.
"The support from the Finnish government and people for Ethiopia's development efforts, particularly in education, water management, energy, and humanitarian sectors, has been invaluable. But we must continue to build on this foundation and explore new frontiers," he said.
The celebration brought together a diverse group, including senior government officials, diplomats, representatives from the African Union and international organizations, the private sector, and members of the Finnish community in Ethiopia. It was a testament to the strength and breadth of their partnership.
