A day after learning Tyson Foerster will be sidelined for at least two months due to a non-contact injury suffered against the Penguins, Philadelphia could be facing another tough setback. Cam York exited the game against the Sabres late in the second period and did not return for the third, following a scramble sparked by a dangerous hit from behind on Trevor Zegras by Rasmus Dahlin.
York did not skate again in the second period after the altercation, and he remained in the locker room as his teammates returned to the ice. There were no obvious ailments immediately after the incident, and York had been seen engaging with Sabres players near the goal, including Josh Doan. While the skirmish didn’t feature heavy punches, Doan grabbed York from behind, adding to the tense moment.
At this point, the official reason for York’s late-frames exit hasn’t been disclosed, and there wasn’t a single, clear trigger that indicated an injury. Nevertheless, it marks another unfortunate development for both the player and the team.
York began the season on injured reserve due to a lower-body injury, causing him to miss the first three games. When on the ice, however, he has been a stabilizing force on Philadelphia’s top pairing, and he carried the best scoring pace of his NHL career. He was projecting to reach 44 points in 79 games, a significant personal best.
This development adds to what had been shaping up as a breakout campaign for York, with his game visibly advancing under coach Rick Tocchet and a renewed, confident surge at the start of the season. He appeared to be evolving into a true top-pair defenseman, more than merely benefiting from playing alongside Travis Sanheim.
The Flyers now await an official diagnosis for York, if one is determined. Coupled with the Foerster update, the team faces back-to-back days of tough news that could jeopardize their playoff hopes. The precise extent of York’s issue remains to be seen, but a serious injury would create two substantial holes on both defense and offense, that's going to be very challenging to fill.
