Ready to unlock a world of opportunities? Tanzania's growing partnership with China is creating exciting new paths for Tanzanians, and a key to unlocking these doors is surprisingly simple: learning Chinese!
At a recent event celebrating Chinese language teachers, Professor Zhang Xiaozhen, Director of the Confucius Institute (CI), shared some impressive numbers. Since its launch in 2013, the CI has equipped over 50,000 Tanzanians with Chinese language skills. And the results? Many have landed jobs or even started their own businesses.
Professor Zhang highlighted that the CI has produced 298 Bachelor's degree graduates and 51 Diploma holders, along with thousands of short-course trainees, including high-level executives from major construction companies. She emphasized that Chinese language proficiency is directly fueling job creation.
"All Chinese learners can find a good job in Tanzania or start their own business," she stated, explaining that companies highly value interpreters fluent in both Chinese and Kiswahili for their communication advantages. Effective communication is essential for Tanzania's economic goals. When employees and employers understand each other, efficiency skyrockets, supporting Tanzania's investment ambitions.
To further expand these opportunities, the CI is launching new programs like 'Chinese & Tourism' and 'Chinese & other subjects,' allowing students to combine language skills with sector-specific knowledge.
Mr. Saad Mtambule, the Kinondoni District Commissioner, emphasized the importance of language in modern economic diplomacy. "Language is crucial for enhancing economic diplomacy and strengthening relationships between communities. Chinese is one of the languages fulfilling this mission… language itself is employment," he said. He pointed out that Chinese, being the world's most spoken language, offers incredible opportunities for African youth.
"By learning this language, you open many doors and ease communication between African and Chinese speakers. I urge young people to continue learning so they can benefit from current and future opportunities." Mr. Mtambule also encouraged Chinese language teachers to promote African languages, especially Kiswahili, globally. He also stressed the importance of Chinese proficiency for professionals supervising Chinese-funded projects.
Dr. Mathew Senga, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), reaffirmed the university's strong partnership with China. He noted that the Confucius Institute at UDSM has been a crucial link in cooperation between China and Tanzania since 2013, facilitating teaching, research, and cultural activities. The Institute connects students with scholarships and job opportunities, especially within Chinese companies operating in Tanzania.
At UDSM, Chinese language programs continue to attract students from various fields, providing them with essential linguistic and cultural skills for today's global economy.
