Jack Draper's Journey Back to the Davis Cup: Overcoming Adversity and Dark Moments
Jack Draper, the British number one tennis player, is gearing up for his highly anticipated return to the Davis Cup. His road to recovery has been a challenging one, filled with "dark moments" and tough times, but he's ready to reclaim his place on the court.
Draper's 2025 season took an unexpected turn when an injury to his upper left arm disrupted his clay-court season in the spring. Since then, he's played just one singles match, a first-round victory at Wimbledon. This setback comes after a remarkable breakout season, where he reached the fourth round at the Australian Open and French Open, claimed his first Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells, and climbed to a career-high ranking of four in June.
Despite his injury, Draper's determination remains unwavering. He attempted a comeback at the US Open, partnering with Jessica Pegula in mixed doubles and winning his first-round singles match. However, he had to withdraw due to injury, and subsequently missed the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in December and the Australian Open.
"It's been a long time since I've been able to compete," Draper shared with the LTA website. "I've stayed in a good place, although it's been tricky with a lot of dark moments and tough times, but that's the sport I signed up for. I'm happy to be back playing again. I miss the buzz of competing. I've missed the thrill of playing in front of people, against great players, and that winning feeling you can't replicate in training. It's going to feel great to get back out there again."
Great Britain, the ten-time Davis Cup champions, are favorites to advance in their first-round qualifier against Norway in Oslo. The team boasts a strong lineup, including Draper and Cameron Norrie, both ranked within the top 30, Jacob Fearnley, and the Grand Slam-winning doubles duo of Lloyd Glasspool and Julian Cash. However, the hosts, Norway, are yet to confirm the availability of Casper Ruud, who became a father last week.
Draper acknowledges the strength of the Norwegian team, led by the young and talentedNicolai Budkov Kjaer, who was once number one in the world juniors and is playing exceptional tennis. He also highlights the consistent performance of Casper Ruud, a top-10 player for a long time.
"We all know Casper Ruud has been a top-10 banker player for a long time," Draper said. "It's going to be a great challenge for us all but I think we're ready to embrace it and fight for every point."
The winner of this tie will advance to the second round qualifier, where they will face either Australia or Ecuador, with a spot at the Davis Cup Finals in Italy on the line.
