The Iconic Lara Croft Returns: A New Era for Tomb Raider
After a lengthy hiatus, the legendary Lara Croft is back, and she's bringing with her not one, but two brand-new Tomb Raider adventures! A welcome surprise for fans, these upcoming games will mark the first new entries in the series since 2018, and they're set to be published by the mighty Amazon.
The announcement at the Game Awards in LA was a thrilling revelation. Game director Will Kerslake introduced Tomb Raider Catalyst, starring the iconic "charismatic, self-assured, formidable Lara Croft" from the beloved 1990s games. This time, Lara's adventures will take her through the vibrant markets, majestic mountains, and ancient buildings of northern India. She'll be racing against other treasure hunters in a quest to uncover artifacts that could potentially bring about catastrophic events. Get ready for an epic journey in 2027!
But here's where it gets interesting: Tomb Raider Catalyst is being developed by Crystal Dynamics, the Canadian studio that has been entrusted with the Tomb Raider franchise since 2003. Crystal Dynamics has an impressive track record, having crafted fan-favorite titles like Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld, as well as the reboot trilogy that introduced a younger, more vulnerable Lara. Their most recent contribution to the series was the highly acclaimed Shadow of the Tomb Raider in 2018.
And what about the other game? Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is a collaborative effort between Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog in Poland. This reimagined adventure takes inspiration from Lara Croft's very first outing in 1996, the game that established her as an iconic gaming character. With modernized combat and redesigned tomb-delving puzzles, Legacy of Atlantis aims to respect the spirit of the original while offering an enhanced experience for today's gamers, built with the powerful Unreal Engine 5. Kerslake explains, "Our goal was to pay homage to the original game while creating a gameplay experience that the technology of the time simply couldn't deliver." Mark your calendars for 2026, as this expanded reimagining is sure to be a treat!
In both games, Lara Croft will be brought to life by the talented British actor Alix Wilton Regan. Regan has already made her mark in the gaming world with significant roles in Dragon Age: Inquisition and Cyberpunk 2077. She was even set to star as Joanna Dark in the sadly canceled remake of Perfect Dark.
Despite the series' recent break, Tomb Raider's brand recognition remains as strong as ever, thanks to its heyday in the 1990s. Amazon is also capitalizing on this iconic franchise with a TV series in the works, starring the talented Sophie Turner as Croft. Over the past three decades, Lara Croft has evolved from a Playboy pin-up to a rugged wilderness adventurer and a gentlewoman action hero, solidifying her place as one of gaming's most beloved and versatile characters.
"Our vision for the series is to showcase Lara's continuous evolution," Kerslake shares. "While her core essence remains, we believe it's crucial to demonstrate how each adventure shapes her character and influences her growth."
