The Minnesota Twins' Offseason Shuffle: A Bullpen Makeover in the Works
In a season that has felt like a slow burn for Twins fans, there's an intriguing development brewing. While last year's offseason saw the team sign key players like Harrison Bader and Ty France in the final stretch, this year, the focus is on strengthening an area of concern: the bullpen.
The Twins have already made some notable moves, including bringing in first baseman Josh Bell and catcher Victor Caratini, and re-signing lefty reliever Taylor Rogers. But as club officials gathered at TwinsFest, they acknowledged that the work isn't done, especially when it comes to fortifying the bullpen.
"Here's where it gets controversial..." The Twins' approach to building their bullpen has been a topic of discussion. With a history of late additions, the team's front office, led by Derek Falvey and Jeremy Zoll, is leaving no stone unturned. Tom Pohlad, the new executive chair, hinted at a continued strategy of seizing creative opportunities to improve the team.
Zoll confirmed the team's financial flexibility, noting that while many top free-agent relievers have already signed elsewhere, trade opportunities are on the horizon. "The trade market is starting to open up," Zoll said, "and that's where we see an opportunity to raise the bar and improve the club."
And this is the part most people miss... The bullpen's transformation began last year at the trade deadline when the Twins sent their top relievers to contending teams. Now, with Rogers and Kody Funderburk in the mix, the focus is on adding a right-handed presence to complement the likes of Cole Sands and Justin Topa.
Beyond trades and free agency, the Twins are exploring another intriguing avenue: converting starting pitchers into relievers. This strategy has paid dividends in the past, producing standout relievers like Rogers, Jhoan Duran, and Griffin Jax. Prospect Connor Prielipp is a name to watch in this context.
"We've shown we can build strong bullpens creatively," Zoll said. "I'm excited to explore different configurations and resource allocations to strengthen our bullpen."
So, Twins fans, what do you think? Are you excited about the potential bullpen makeover? Do you agree with the team's approach, or do you have your own ideas on how to strengthen the team? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
