New York's socialist lawmakers are gearing up for a powerful return to the state legislature, inspired by the unexpected victory of Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani's rise from a socialist backbencher to the mayor of the nation's largest city has not only shocked political observers but also thrust his affordability agenda into the spotlight. Mamdani's former colleagues are now capitalizing on this momentum, aiming to push their socialist agenda further.
State Senator Jabari Brisport from Brooklyn feels the movement is gaining traction, emphasizing the political moment to tax the rich and provide universal child care. This session will test the strength of Mamdani and the handful of state lawmakers aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) as they strive to gain widespread support for their policies. These policies include raising taxes on the state's highest earners to fund priorities like universal child care and free buses, which Mamdani campaigned on in New York City.
Despite being a small group, the eight DSA-aligned lawmakers, known as Albany's 'socialists in office', have already achieved significant legislative victories, such as passing clean energy investments and raising the minimum wage. They are now supporting a suite of bills to generate billions in new revenue by taxing affluent New Yorkers and corporations. For instance, the 'Fair Share Act', sponsored by Assemblymember Phara Souffrant Forrest, proposes a 2% surcharge on individuals earning over $1 million annually, estimated to raise $4 billion annually.
However, previous attempts to tax wealthy New Yorkers have faced challenges at the state level. While both chambers of the Legislature have supported income-tax hikes, Governor Kathy Hochul has rejected the idea, and business groups argue that higher taxes will drive high earners out of the state. Yet, in recent weeks, Hochul has indicated a potential openness to increasing the state's corporate tax rate, which Mamdani and the DSA-aligned lawmakers have proposed. One of their shared goals is to enact a universal child care program, with Mamdani prioritizing free child care during his mayoral campaign and Hochul committing to it in her State of the State address.
Despite the challenges, socialist lawmakers remain determined. They argue that the need for child care is immense, and the recent freezing of $10 billion in child care subsidies by the Trump administration has only exacerbated the deficit. Brisport emphasizes that raising revenue through higher taxes on high earners and corporations is the only viable solution. Mamdani's campaign volunteers are pledged to continue organizing grassroots support, mobilizing New Yorkers to pressure legislators and the governor to tax the rich for universal child care.
The DSA-aligned state lawmakers, with the exception of Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha, represent parts of New York City. Shrestha, the first New York state legislator of Nepali origin, won her election in 2022, proving that DSA's messaging resonates across the state. Assemblymember Emily Gallagher from Brooklyn hopes that Mamdani's election will encourage more people to join their progressive movement, emphasizing the popularity and effectiveness of their agenda.
