Is Elias Pettersson destined for Detroit? The rumor mill is churning, and the Detroit Red Wings are reportedly eyeing Vancouver Canucks' star Elias Pettersson. But is this a match made in Hockeytown, or just a pipe dream? Let's dive in!
According to Frank Seravalli on Sportsnet’s Canucks Central, the Red Wings are showing interest as the Canucks consider retooling their roster. This news follows reports that Vancouver is open to offers for Pettersson, though they aren't actively shopping him.
But here's where it gets complicated... Trading Pettersson won't be a walk in the park. His current contract includes a full no-move clause, meaning he has the final say on any potential trade destinations. His hefty contract, with an $11.6 million average annual value (AAV), adds another layer of complexity. This gives Pettersson and his representatives, led by CAA's Pat Brisson, complete control over his future. Any trade needs his approval before it can happen.
However, the Red Wings might be an appealing destination. They are one of the few competitive teams that could absorb Pettersson's significant cap hit. Also, considering Detroit's history of success with Swedish players, Pettersson might be more inclined to approve a trade to the Motor City.
So, how would Pettersson fit in Detroit? Even if he returns to his top form, it's unlikely he'd replace Dylan Larkin as the top center. This would mean Pettersson potentially becoming one of the highest-paid second-line centers in the league. Over the past two seasons in Vancouver, Pettersson has scored 28 goals and 74 points in 104 games, while Larkin has recorded 54 goals and 114 points in 132 games.
Currently, the Red Wings are using Andrew Copp as their second-line center. Copp has been a top scorer in the league for over a month. Since December, he's scored 7 goals and 21 points in 24 games, with a 51.2% faceoff percentage, creating a strong top-six duo for Detroit.
And this is the part most people miss... Red Wings General Manager Steve Yzerman is known for keeping his cards close to his chest. Leaks from the Red Wings organization are rare since Yzerman took over, so any rumors should be taken with a grain of salt. However, given their lack of recent trade deadline moves and their current position in the standings, it would make sense for the Red Wings to make a move or two before this year's deadline.
