The First Cap: A Gift to a World Baseball Classic Legend
As Paul Skenes prepares for his inaugural World Baseball Classic, the All-Star right-hander recently met one of the tournament's greatest players. At the Pirates' camp in Bradenton, Florida, Skenes signed a Team USA cap for the legendary Daisuke Matsuzaka, a two-time WBC MVP.
In a social media video, Skenes expressed his honor: "This is the first USA cap I've signed, and it's for you."
Matsuzaka's achievements in the WBC are remarkable. In 2006, he led Japan to the inaugural WBC championship, earning the tournament MVP and the win in the final against Cuba. He repeated this success in 2009, again claiming the MVP title as Japan defended its title. Matsuzaka's WBC legacy includes six wins, 23 strikeouts, and 27.3 innings pitched, ranking him second in innings pitched and first in wins and strikeouts.
With a 6-0 record in six WBC starts and a 1.95 ERA, Matsuzaka's performance across both tournaments is exceptional. Skenes now has the opportunity to create his own WBC legacy, joining a stalwart rotation alongside AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal. The Americans will begin their journey in Pool B against Brazil on March 6th.
This encounter between Skenes and Matsuzaka highlights the rich history of the WBC and the potential for new stars to emerge. As Skenes signs his first cap, he not only acknowledges Matsuzaka's greatness but also embarks on his own path to becoming a WBC legend.
