In the early days of 1975, a call from Tom Petty changed the course of Charlie Souza's musical journey. Souza, a seasoned musician with a successful past, was enticed by Petty's offer to join his band, Mudcrutch. Despite some initial reservations, Souza accepted, eager to be a part of the band's promising future.
The band's recording sessions in Leon Russell's basement studio were a highlight for Souza. He admired Russell's work and was thrilled to be creating music with Petty and the band. However, things took a turn as the sessions became more sporadic, and the band's energy seemed to wane, particularly Tom's.
Souza's personal life also took a hit as he and his wife struggled in their new Hollywood home. Little did he know that his dreams of musical success would soon be shattered.
One fateful day, Souza walked into the recording studio to find only Tom Petty there. Petty broke the news: the band had disbanded. Souza's mind raced back to Mike Campbell's words about making it big together, a promise now seemingly dashed.
Stranded in California, Souza had to pick up the pieces. A year later, he heard Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' song 'Hometown Blues' on the radio, only to discover his bass track had been replaced without his knowledge or consent. He took legal action, but the encounter with producer Denny Cordell at the hearing was icy.
Souza's career took a turn for the worse, and he found himself in a creative slump. Years later, when Petty reformed Mudcrutch, Souza sought answers from their former drummer, Randall Marsh. Marsh's words brought some comfort, but they didn't shed light on why Souza was let go.
Souza believes his inability to express his feelings, a trait Mike Campbell termed 'covert aggression,' may have played a role in his departure. He suspects Petty's dissatisfaction with his predecessor's song offerings could have been a factor too.
Despite the uncertainty, Souza holds no grudges. He cherishes the time he spent with Petty and the band. He even plans to record the song that may have led to his departure, 'Brother in the Sky,' on his next album.
Tom Petty's passing in 2017 leaves many questions unanswered, but Souza's memoir, 'Live Your Dream,' published with Petty's blessing, offers a glimpse into his musical journey and the impact of Mudcrutch.
